'Angelina Jolie' alias Aliya Mustafina at Lake Krugloye

While the Russian men prepare to fight for gold at Europeans, the Russian women - and in particular the Olympians who form the core of the team - have been enjoying some party games arranged for them by sponsor VTB.  As you can see, 2013 European floor champion Ksenia Afanasyeva ended up with the 'Oscar'.

You can watch a film of the revelry here - Maria Paseka has a particularly infectious giggle.

The gymnasts were : Denis: Adam Sandler, David: Jennifer Lawrence, Aliya: Angelina Jolie, Viktoria: Dukalis, Maria: Sylvester Stallone, Ksenia: Brad Pitt

Speaking of infectious, Rodionenko has just explained that following surgery Aliya Mustafina is unable to train fully at present.  Rodionenko describes the surgery as 'removal of cysts'; we don't quite know what this means but as Aliya posted pictures of herself after dental surgery earlier this week, I think it is most likely the removal of an impacted wisdom tooth, which can be extremely uncomfortable.  This is just life, dear readers, not a disaster - I wouldn't worry about it besides wishing Aliya a good recovery.

Elsewhere, Valentina explains that the priority for Komova's preparations is Worlds - don't expect too much of her before this autumn is the message, I think.  Keep the faith.

Pancake Day at Round Lake is delicious - Ksenia Afanasyeva

Thin blini with jam - a favourite of Ksenia Afanasyeva, especially when made by her grandma

VTB has been doing some great PR for Russia recently, covering some traditions that will be familiar to us in the West as shared rituals.  'Maslennitsa' - Shrove Tuesday - is celebrated in Russia in much the same way as it is in the rest of Europe, by the eating of pancakes ('blini').  Then afterwards there is Lent, 40 days of fasting.

Ksenia Afanasyeva says : 'Maslennitsa certainly isn't the 'right' holiday for gymnasts, but it is delicious! Don't think that we only look at the pancakes or pinch a small piece off the corner.  Since childhood we have celebrated the feast, and made pancakes with mother, but my grandma's are the best, simply delicious.  Since we lived in different houses, it meant we got to celebrate more than once.

I like thin pancakes with jam.  With caviar or salt fish is still good, but sweet is best.

It is always nice; the chefs at Round Lake make pancakes, and we have them for lunch.  I will allow myself exactly two - I won't worry about the calories, because I will burn them off in the gym.  It is always a pleasure.'

Picture of Ksenia courtesy of her fan group on VK.com

Oh and for good measure, the recently happily pancaked Russian team is back at Round Lake.  Aliya proudly announced herself as the first arrival this morning; and now in this picture from Alla Sosnitskaya's Instagram page, we see Alla with team mates Seda Tutkhalyan, Anastasia Dmitrieva and Angelina Melnikova.  Can anyone say who that is having a back rub?

Thank you Alla!  And GOOD LUCK to the entire team as you continue your preparations for this vital year - we are all thinking of you xxx.

'An interview with Valentina Rodionenko. Important information she shares:
- The flu has been going around Round Lake. Those who will not compete at Nationals are Aliya Mustafina, Emin Garibov and Alexander Balandin, although is not because of flu but because of recovery from injuries.
- Komova really wants to compete all around, but they have decided against it and she and Afanasyeva will just do two events.
- Kharenkova, Spiridonova, Bondareva and Dmitrieva all look very good. Tutkhalyan is increasing her difficulty on bars still.
- Candidates for European Championships will be considered from the top 3 athletes on each event. Even with mistakes at the event, they will look at potential and invite them to the camp. Final decisions will be made then.
- Main contenders for the Euro team are now Afanasyeva, Komova, Spiridonova, Kharenkova and Sosnitskaya. For all around are mentioned Kharenkova and Shelgunova. Elizarova is also named as a serious contender.'

Dolly-Z has provided the following news from her blog : http://dolly-z.tumblr.com/post/112496835068/anastasia-grishina-will-miss-2015-russian -

'Anastasia Grishina will miss 2015 Russian Nationals due to the knee injury.

Nastia injured her knee again, right before the Nationals.
It happened on practice last week (end of the February) while she was doing vault.
She was doing Double twisting Yurchenko, but underrotated the second twist and hurt the same knee she’d hurt last year. Doctors said there is nothing really serious. She luckily didn’t break any bone and didn’t tore anything! But she’ll have to miss Nationals.

So sad to hear it. She was in a good shape. It took her a year to recover from her last injury she got in April 2014. And now such a disappointing moment again :( But she will be ok!

Let’s wish her a speedy recovery! Stay strong, Nastia! ❤'

It is only early in the season, so there is plenty of time for Nastia to recover and perhaps gain eligibility for competitions later in the year - the Universiade, for example.  Nastia is mature and philosophical about her injury.  She said :  "We don't play chess. You need always to be prepared for that".

Good luck, Nastia!  RRG and friends wishes you the very best for a speedy recovery!

Novyi Izvestia has an interview with Andrei Rodionenko today, the first day of Russian Championships.  Google translate in italics, below

"Unfortunately, injuries are making adjustments in our training"

Russia coach gymnastics Andrew Rodionenko
Oksana Tonkacheeva
Today kicks off in Penza Russian championship in gymnastics. According to its results will form a team to participate in the European Championships, which will be held April 15-19 in Montpellier, France. About the features of the upcoming season, the state leaders of the team, as well as the challenges facing the team a year before the Olympics, "New News" told her the head coach Andrei Rodionenko.

- This year the European gymnasts waiting game, continental championship, the World Cup ... This tight competition schedule in the pre-Olympic year - that's a plus or a minus?
- No one knows how things will turn out. A very difficult question, and the answer to it you now no one will. The answer we get at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. If you remember, when all our strongest gymnasts performed at the Universiade in Kazan, the World Cup has developed for us is not very good. Of course, the same team to put up all the tournaments unrealistic. Let us choose, depending on the athlete being, state. Of course, take into account the experience and past seasons. If the preparation will involve a sufficient number of gymnasts, I think we will cope with the task.

- You can say that men now there is such a team, which on the eve of the London Olympic could only dream?

- You know, yes. Highlight some of the young? Better to let them demonstrate it themselves. Can be called a lot of names, but the point is in the results that show the guys. The fact also that the receipt, so to speak, from the youth team there every year, but the level of athletes is not always the one that would like to see. Need a lot of work. And then, it is one thing to train a core team near the leaders, the other - to act. Guys, on which we now expect not passed even a single start in the adult platform. So Penza already get some answers. Candidates yes, enough, but now it's only a theoretical promise ...

- As state leaders - Ablyazin, Bielawski, Garibova?

- Many ill with the flu, but the overall mood in the team is good. Of the strongest in Penza not perform Emin Garibov and Alexander Balandin. All the rest - in the ranks. Garibov is still recovering from its complex operations, and Balandin though started training yet can not operate at full capacity. Denis Ablyazin at the end of the year and was operated, and there are nuances associated with his health. Denis is constantly under medical supervision, but in training shows a very good level of readiness. Even more complicated vault, confidently takes the floor exercise. Hopefully, it will show a high level now. In her best kinds gymnast until the competition. Unfortunately, injuries in general are constantly making adjustments to the preparation, planning, team building.

- What happened to Aliya Mustafina? Why is the Olympic champion will not play in the championship of Russia?

- Alia back injury healed, then she removed the tooth and brush, so she has not received the required condition. We decided that it makes no sense to force training. Alia Skip April European Championship, but for the World Cup should have time to prepare properly. One of the challenges that it faces, is related to the complexity of programs. Otherwise, to fight for the gold medal will be almost impossible. Her first start is likely to become European games in Baku, which will be held in June.

- How to feel Viktoria Komova and Ksenia Afanasyeva, missed last season due to injury?

- Afanasyev will act in its two forms - in the floor exercise and vault. Vika still aches a bit back, so most likely, it will be released only on bars and beam. Komova trains, but also not yet in full force. We try to minimize the risks that it could recover completely. We have to sacrifice something. In another not. Modern gymnastics requires total commitment, but it needs to heal all ailments as possible. Level of difficulty now is that the slightest distraction from this course can lead to disastrous consequences. Even those who himself went to the platform a few years ago, can not always imagine the complexity of modern programs. That is why it is very difficult to pass at least two Olympic cycle, not to mention three.

- What is special European and World Championships this year?

- Each tournament involves different regulations. At the upcoming European Championship will not be the team competition, will compete for medals in the individual types of exercises. In Montpellier will select those works best for the individual shells. And at the World Championships in Glasgow is another limit. There's just more all-rounders will need to command the result is as high as possible. So you have to work at once on all fronts.

'I really enjoy working with Sergei Valerivich' says Aliya of her new coaching arrangement, adding that it is great to have someone to help.  In an earlier interview she has said she and Sergei Starkin, who also coaches world gold medallist Denis Ablyazin, are working on upgrades to her bars and floor exercises.  She and Ablyazin train at separate times, in separate gyms; it is important to have the one to one attention of a coach, Aliya says.

Valeri Starkin, Sergei's father and recently appointed to the national coaching staff, commented on the good atmosphere and competition, here in his home gym.  The Volga Federal District team (Pavlov, Kazachkov, Stepanov, Polyashov, Ablyazin, Belyavski) won the team event in today's competition.  Siberia came second.  Full results can be found at http://sportgymrus.ru/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/c1_team5_m.pdf

Komova, Tutkhalyan will fight for a place on Russia's Euros team

$

Head WAG coach Evgeny Grebyonkin has confirmed further details of the Russian team for April's European Championships, reports Allsport.

On the basis of their performance at the Russian Championships, Ksenia Afanasyeva, Maria Kharenkova and Daria Spiridinova have been confirmed for the team.  Fighting for the final place will be Alla Sosnitskaya, Viktoria Komova, Maria Paseka and first year senior Seda Tutkhalyan.

The Russian coaches face some tough selection decisions as they attempt to balance a relative paucity of all around talent this year with the diverse specialisms of such gymnasts as Spiridinova, Afanasyeva and Komova.  Both Sosnitskaya and Tutkhalyan (whose D score AA of 23.7 ranks third in the international ranks so far this year, behind Simone Biles and Evgeniya Shelgunova) offer potential at both specialist (respectively vault (Sosnitskaya) and beam (Tutkhakyan)) and AA level.  Much will depend on the nerve of the coaches and the way these gymnasts respond in preparation at Lake Krugloye.

Given the exigences of training and the time frame now involved before Montpellier, we should expect there to be changes to the line up. Grebyonkin did mention that others are in the mix.  My guess would be that Shelgunova, with her 23.8 D value, will be on the fringes, but another fast-improving gymnast is Anastasia Dmitrieva.  Grebyonkin emphasised that the selection would take into account the results of control competitions held during the training camp at Lake Krugloye, and said that the girls were constantly working to improve.  He was pleased with the performance of the first year seniors, who had overcome significant psychological challenges in making the step up to challenge those they might consider gymnastically to be their 'big sisters' (my words).  Some of the team might even add new combinations to their routines for Montpelier.

In another interview, Daria Spiridinova explained how she was returning straight to Krugloye to continue her preparations right after the Championships, without even returning for a short break at home.  Not all of the gymnasts are doing the same, but this demonstrates the serious attitude Spiridinova has towards this competition.

I hope Russia will consider blooding some new talent at the EC.  It would be fine experience and preparation for the forthcoming World Championships, which are a qualifying event for the Olympics.

Good luck to all the team!  Work hard, and be happy!

Seven men compete for six places at Euros - Valery Alfosov

The top seven gymnasts at Penza will compete for the six places on the Russian team for Euros, confirmed head coach Valery Alfosov today to Allsport.

On the basis of the results of the national championships, the following gymnasts are in contention:

All Around : David Belyavski and Nikolai Kuksenkov
Denis Ablyazin : floor, rings and vault
Nikita Nagorny : floor and vault
Mattvei Petrov : pommel horse
Nikita Ignatyev : rings, p-bars and high bar
Mikhail Kudashov : rings (he has a D value of 6.8 but was unable to show his best as he was still recovering from the effects of flu)

At present, the reserve is Dmitri Lankin, who has potential on floor and parallel bars.

As with the women, other gymnasts will be training for the competition and new names may still be added to the roster according to the results of control competitions.

Alfosov stressed that almost the entire team had performed below par in Penza thanks to the effects of a nasty flu bug.  With another four weeks of training before travelling to Montpelier, the team would be targeting stability, better execution and higher performance quality as well as increasing the complexity of their programmes.  David Belyavski, for example, has the potential to increase his D value on p bars from 6.8 to 7.

Simone Biles - 'on her way to Olympic gold' in the opinion of Russia

Prosport is carrying the following article about Simone Biles, who they tip as a favourite for Olympic gold.  I thought I would share it here (Google translate in italics) as it gives an interesting perspective on where the Russians feel the sport is heading.  Elena Zamolidchikova and Alexander Alexandrov are both extensively quoted.

Atypical American. Simon Biles on the way to Olympic gold

Simone Biles, American gymnast, turned 18 on March 14, 2015. Shortly before this, the first in US history absolute Olympic gymnastics champion Mary Lou Retton called Biles perhaps the most gifted athlete in the history of the sport. In 2014, Simon became the first gymnast for 40 years to win four gold at a World Championships. But Biles is not only talent. This is the first gymnast in recent years from the United States, who is not going to earn on its potential Olympic success.

Text: Alexander Vladimirov March 15, 2015 9:35

The article on Prosport/Photo: Lintao Zhang / Getty Images / Fotobank.ru

The first world championship in her career Simone Biles ended in scandal. Competitions were on a beam overlooking the penultimate women's final. Biles acted not entirely successful, but still won the bronze.  The Italian, Carlotta Ferlito, whispered to her friend Vanessa Ferrari : "The next time we need to make our skin black, and then we will also win." Whisper was too loud, and the Italian's words came to the ears of the USA Gymnastics Federation . Officials considered it a racist remark and demanded an official apology. And Simone arrived at the next World Championship and proved - it is not a colour, but the fact that she now simply has no equal in the world.

After the Russian Svetlana Khorkina left the sport, in the women's gymnastics was no hint of the hegemony of a single athlete. From 2004 to 2013 all major events (Olympic Games and World Championships) in the individual all-around, the most prestigious gymnastic discipline, won various gymnasts. During this time, the absolute champion had become eight girls from the United States, one Italian and one Russian - Aliya Mustafina. Repeat its success could only Simone Biles, the first African-American woman who became the absolute world champion. At two world championships - 2013 and 2014 - she won nine medals, six of which - gold. At these tournaments Simone did not get on the podium in only one discipline - Uneven Bars.

Photo: Jared Wickerham / Getty Images / Fotobank.ru

"There is a category of athletes who love to perform - explains the two-time Olympic gymnastics champion Elena Zamolodchikova. - They might have something go wrong in training, but on the competition platform changes everything. It's a very small category of athletes, and Simone Biles - one of them. Love to fight and act - it is really unique. Plus, Simone is very gifted by nature. Her main strength - jump in the shells, they need very strong, "tolkuchie" legs - as Simone. Even beam is at a very decent for all around level, however, I did not think she could pull it up to fight for the medals in a single discipline. This apparatus is likely to remain the other gymnasts, although, of course, anything can happen in sport. "

Speaking of the American Olympic prospects, Zamolodchikova agrees - Simone Biles really needs to become a favourite for the Games in Rio de Janeiro. The complexity of her programmes every year only grow, and added experience. But what will happen after the Olympics, a former gymnast and now a judge of the international category, is not ready to predict.

"The American school gymnastics is notorious for girls after big wins at the Olympic Games to finish their career - says Zamolodchikova. - 'They start a project, do advertising endorsements, and so on. I can not even give one example of an American gymnast who continued to practice after having won the gold, and then returned to her previous level. "

American gymnasts do not return, primarily because it is not needed. Gymnastics in the United States is now at a level that instead of a champion can come several athletes who are ready to repeat the result. Time when the Soviet /Russian gymnasts shared all the gold with Romania is in the past. With each Olympic cycle superiority of the American school is becoming more noticeable.

Photo: Dean Mouhtaropoulos / Getty Images / Fotobank.ru

It all started in 1981 when Romanian expert Bela Karolyi and his wife, Martha, coaches five times Olympic champion Nadia Comaneci, moved to America.  They began to do business at the gym, which already in the nineties began to bring very good money.

"A related tide of coaches from [former] socialist countries, the Soviet Union - says the former coach of women's national team of Russia and Aliya Mustafina Alexander Alexandrov, who has worked for more than ten years in the United States. - It was Bella Karoly called me to work in the United States. When we came to the local competition, it was not clear - whether we are in the United States, whether in the championship of Russia. Around it was a Russian. Now, of course, there are fewer Russian-speaking professionals. Many simply left for other countries. "

In the US, so far there is no centralized training of the national team (as in Russia). Neither gymnast does not sit permanently on the basis of the team. Everyone involved in the club, and just before the start all the important members of the team come together.

"In the US gymnastics now - a very popular sport, - says Alexander. - Children and parents see victory on television and are willing to pay for something, to learn to speak the same way. Many people want to train in those rooms, where he grew up champion. If the result of, then there is a good coach. On the one hand, children will not be hanging out on the street - there is also plenty of options for how to lose a child. On the other hand, if there are successes, then, at least, will have the opportunity to go to university and get free higher education and it is in the United States very expensive. There is still a chance to get into the national team, and go to the Olympics. But that's another return. They say that the Olympic champion Douglas earned $90 million - on advertising and so on. It is clear that the figure, it is perhaps exaggerated, but advertising contracts champions really earn very well. "

However, not everyone is ready to accept the conditions of the game, for which there is an American gymnastic world. In November 2014 Simon Biles signed an agreement with the University of California, Los Angeles (12th place in the ranking of the best universities in the world) that after the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, she will become a student member of the local student team. Education Simone will be free, as it will pay a stipend, but to participate in the filming of advertising and other commercial activities according to the rules of the National Collegiate Athletic Association gymnast can not.

"I think student gymnastics - is more or less the goal of everyone who begins to engage in sports, of course, if you do not talk about a trip to the Olympics. - Explained his choice in an interview with ESPN Biles. - I think it's great - to finish your career in the status of student-athlete. I think student exercises a lot more fun than the adult professional. There's all too seriously. And I want little kids looked at me and said, "Wow, she really gets pleasure from it all!"

Sergei Starkin - image from Sports Express

Sergei Starkin is part of a formidable father and son pairing for whom coaching gymnastics is a family affair.  His father, Valery Starkin, will be well known to gymnastics fans as the sharp-eyed, white-haired  Head Coach of the Burtasy School of Gymnastics in Penza, frequent home to the Russian National Championships.  The School has grown in importance over recent years: the success of homegrown World Champion, the impressive and powerful Denis Ablyazin, gave the Club its profile; Valeri Starkin's astute management of this facility has gained recognition and support from the Ministry of Sport; the recent alignment of 2012 Olympic Champion Aliya Mustafina to personal coach Sergei Starkin has reinforced the club's reputation across WAG as well as MAG.  There are even some who say that Valeri, with his strong ties within the Russian coaching hierarchy, long experience of management and influence, and links to Russia's most likely Rio medallists, might be next in line for the top job in Russian gymnastics, after the Rio Olympics.

Now read on (Google translate below, italics) as Elena Vaitsekhovskaya (her interviews with Leonid Arkayev and, previously, Alexander Alexandrov proved influential), interviews Sergei Starkin - whose dual role as coach to both Ablyazin and Mustafina is without precedent.  There is interesting MAG content here, as well as WAG.

I will link to any better translations that become available.

He - Hereditary gymnastic coach. Grew up in the hall, just as children grow up in a circus arena filings. To the question, which is not enough to be a gymnast to first-class, short answer: "Total". In 20 years, first came to the legendary gymnastic base "Round Lake", ibid firmly assimilated gold from silver can sometimes be separated is not a bug, but only barely perceptible, imperceptible normal eye loss of balance. Therefore, it is to such an extent and valuable - gymnastic gold.
In 2014, his student Denis Ablyazin first became world champion - won the floor exercise in Nanning China. A few months later the group Starkin there is another athlete: coach asked for help London Olympic champion Aliya Mustafina.
* * *
- I perfectly know what it means to take an apprentice Olympic champion. A huge responsibility, but at the same time - no guarantee results.
- It is.
- In that case, what prompted you agree? You've probably seen that "gymnastic" state Mustafina has been steadily going downhill.
- Something he saw, heard a lot from others. At the same time knew that Alia really needs help. And when at the beginning of December, she approached me, probably just could not refuse. Mustafina really needs an assistant who could help explain, persuade, compel, sorry ...
- Excuse me, but for a large sports I would rather believe in what is called the coaching ambition than altruism.
- This is not altruism. Frankly, I believe that from such proposals do not give up. Such athletes as Mustafina, born once in a few decades. Work with them very interesting. Although I am fully aware that, under a lens I am. Least of all striving now something to someone to prove. I have no such amount of vanity. All I wanted to prove, as a coach, has already proved - Denis.
- Oh you?
- Well, almost all. We've really gold medal of silver is often different to the one tiny little step in the direction of ...
- ... Which sometimes breaks the athlete's psyche for life.
- It happens. I'm just talking now about something else. The fact that you can become the second, was not originally thinking about gold, due to objective reasons. And you can act so that everyone will understand: you're no worse than the one who became a champion ... Alia immediately clear goals outlined to me that would like to implement. She - a very smart girl, so left without a coach since the beginning knew very well what happens with it. Long enough to attempt to find a way out. In other words, the decision to apply to me she matured. For me, it has become absolutely unexpected request.
* * *
- Did you take some time to think?
- Of Course. First it was kind of lost, to be honest. The very process of combining work with two athletes of the caliber of Mustafina and Ablyazin - the first two numbers of our gymnastics - the situation is not ordinary. Therefore, for three days, I did not say anything. Just thought.
- What, if not secret?
- How to make working with Alija if I'll take it over, had no effect on my work with Dennis. Ablyazin, incidentally, was the first one whose opinion I asked. And immediately asked him to be as frank. Whether Denis mind, I probably would have said Mustafina "no."
- That is, the probability that a student can say "no", you are still allowed?
- Of Course. I think any athlete in this situation will begin to fear that may lose some share of coaching attention. We're on for many years a very close contact with Ablyazin and in the hall and outside it. And I was afraid to ruin the relationship. This, indeed, was the problem.
- Does not anyone of his colleagues in those three days, never said to you, 'You fool, stop, why do you need? "
- Behind said. But after I received the consent of Denis, in its decision no longer doubted. Alie at once said, if we start working together, it must be reversed. Beginning with the work in the gym and ending the life out of it. Success in modern gymnastics - a combination of a number of things. Lifestyle, not just a workout. Without changing the image, the result is not achieved. Especially one which wants to Alia.
- What do you mean by "way of life"?
- In my purely personal opinion gymnast whole life should be completely subordinated to the result. Mode, in which a person lives from day to day, sleeping, eating, fine athletic training. In this regard, we have to Ablyazin for several years all signs as detailed as possible.
* * *
- Sverhtalantlivye Many athletes are usually not only lazy but inwardly convinced that are capable of coping with any situation any problem. When Ablyazin only got a team, in my opinion it featured just such an attitude to many things. Lightweight, if not disregard.
- And so it was. But I still managed to explain to him that modern gymnastics is so complex and hard physically, that if we set a goal to become the first - and not in the country, of course - have to go to some kind of sacrifice.
- In words, sounds easy.
- In fact, to change the psychology of the athlete in such cases is extremely difficult. It was difficult and Denis. Figuratively speaking, at some point we had not gone ahead and moved separate shazhochkami. Take one step and see that it changes the outcome, Ablyazin already more likely to do the second. Well, after a few steps to persuade him not accounted for. Actually, this Dennis and different from many other athletes when understands that work is needed, then executes it very carefully to the end. It is necessary, for example, eat 180 grams of pasta, then it will be just 180 grams.
- Really have to control myself so harshly?
- Denis for a long time had a problem with weight. But she went after him develop an individual meal plan.
- And Mustafina this problem is also present?
- Yes I Am. Therefore, we have developed a similar, and for her. Let's try it.
- More than once I have heard from other coaches that Mustafina - very difficult in people. That's it?
- The fact that we have with Aliya really hard work has not yet begun, we are only beginning to approach it. But I know for sure: if I start to adapt to the nature of athletes, this will make it worse to her.
- Tell me, do you ever feel inner discomfort from what must be tough with the athletes, require them to concrete discipline?
- ... Yes I Am.
- What exactly do you bother?
- Can not always predict the response. Still, the main task of a coach - not to be tough and principled, and achieve the goal. If, in response to their actions coach gets complete rejection, it is - only his fault.
* * *
- Starting to work with Ablyazin from scratch, you were forced all the time to grow and develop in parallel with the athlete. There has never been scared to make a mistake?
- Sometimes. And still is. Nothing to do with anyone not even advise. At one time I got to the "round", helping his father. Therefore, and abroad in those years did not go, although the proposals were. Dad at the time was the director of the gymnastic center in Penza. When he left the training camp, some of the work fell on the mother. Then she began to fall on me. Although I confess honestly, in those years, and I had no idea that one day I will go up to the level of coaching, which now came out with Ablyazin. From the beginning I knew very well what to do to be born athlete, and how you should be a coach to be able to work with such an athlete. Now we are already out of Denis to a height where few coaches raised. Many things to us, no one even tried. That has to reach all your mind.
- Games in London was for you first?
- Yes I Am.
- And what left an impression?
- I can not say that they were perceived as a holiday. Although previously heard a lot about the Games in this vein.
- I would say, as a celebration of the Olympic Games can take except that those athletes and coaches who have no chance to fight for the medals.
- Perhaps you're right. I still remember the tension, which is not even hung in the air, and brings down on all sides, it was necessary to cross the threshold of the room. Get the bulb - she would be there broke out, without any wires. On the other hand, is about the same voltage, and I felt at the World Championships in Nanning, where Denis won the first gold. Simply Olympic medals were before. And caused some inexpressible emotions. Unrealistic.
* * *
- The maximum possible complexity to which you constantly strive to Ablyazin - this is a deliberate tactic, or in some situations, you can do without it?
- Simply, we set ourselves the task to fight for first place. If you look at the results of major competitions, it becomes obvious: for the second place in any final can fight any athlete. But the leader, as a rule, stands alone.
- How Epke Zonderland on the bar and Kohei Uchimura - in the all-around?
- Yes I Am. And Kenzo Shirai - the floor exercise, Korean Pu Wang Ce - vault, the Chinese Yang Yo - on the rings. Here we are with them and want to fight.
- The current level of complexity for this is enough?
- We have complicated this season combination in the floor exercise, but it is not enough. One of the vault Denis new. I would like to complicate and second jump, but it's out of the realm of fantasy. Prevent gaps of a technical nature, which we still can not be completely eliminated. And still: the aggregate of the basic complexity Ablyazin on this apparatus among the top three in the world. There are certain ideas and rings. Do not force nature. Do, say, "cross" upside down so that everyone gasped, Denis does not allow shoulder. And if you perform this element at the secondary level, it will not surprise anybody.
- What you can do now to surprise someone in the gym?
- Well, look: at the last World Cup base complexity combination Ablyazin on the carpet was 7.1, while Shirai - 7.4. After the competition was the traditional judicial investigation, where it was said that 7.4 - this is certainly good, but there is nothing good that all this complexity is achieved through the "screws".
- But for this not reduce the assessment?
- No. Nevertheless, the claim was announced. Ablyazin makes the carpet all the exercises, which is possible. I do not think that someone from the other gymnasts program is more diverse.
- A variety and originality somehow encouraged?
- Objectively - no.
- And why do they seek it?
- In the case of Ablyazin everything was much simpler: we just tried to include in the combination all that we can. Receive diversity.
- What is now a priority in your plans for the season?
- As close as possible to those programs that we Ablyazin and Mustafina will exhibit at the European Championships 2016. If we can do it in the fall, will be very good. Then we will have six months until the next spring and another three months - on the direct preparation for the Games in Rio. I do not think that the Olympic Games or World Championships - those competitions where you want to try something. There can not be wrong.
* * *
- Your colleagues in the coaching workshop often complain that the current generation of athletes is much less focused on sports purposes than the previous. Too many temptations around and too grown level of material prosperity. For you, this is a problem?
- No. Because I work with athletes, which we understand to what purpose are going.
- How big is your view distance, which will have to overcome Mustafina to catch up with the leaders?
- This distance is certainly there. But I think that we will be able to reduce it to a minimum fairly quickly. Alia - a truly unique athlete. All he can, technically adept and have a sufficiently wide range of qualities that do not actually limit the range of its capabilities. We have already identified some maximum program, which will try to implement. All limited only by the current state of health. The problem we are now jointly and decide. In my opinion - successfully. The next step will be the complexity of programs.
During the time that we work together Mustafina, I managed to make: a purely technical manner Alia training, as well as its way of thinking, closer to men than to women's. She is well developed motor memory. And a large number of repetitions to learn this or that element is not required.
- Does it matter?
- Very much. Gymnastics become too complex, it requires a very high concentration of each workout, and due to this accumulated stress. While we try to deal with it. For example, the elements that are actually executed at the limit of human capabilities, we are doing with Dennis in training only in excellent health and physical condition. And even then not always. The problem is surely simple: the body can make ultra-sophisticated vault five times in a row. But the brain can not sustain such a load.
* * *
- Of those who Ablyazin will compete at the Olympic Games in Rio, there are athletes who you admire?
- No. Let me explain why: if I just looked at these athletes from the side, as a novice coach, may be admired complexity, trying to figure out how they do it. And so - because we are all nearby, varimsya in a "mess." And we should not admire, and think about how to beat. Well, yes, I could admire Zonderland on the crossbar. But all too well aware of what to invest in one shell, and that - to be competitive on a few.
- Who is more formidable opponent - Japanese or Chinese?
- In what sense?
- Well, for example, in diving Chinese often begin to make mistakes unusual for them if the competition no longer go to their scenario.
- In the gym this also happens. And not only the Chinese, by the way. You know, it's easy not to make mistakes when you mad gap. Head athlete in this case is so disconnected from what is happening around, he just quietly working on the equipment. It has no external interference. It's quite another thing when the opponents sit on your heels, and you even lose the ability to think about anything other than that. For this reason, in fact, the case of most errors.
- Not so long ago, was a witness to the debate: can it be considered a full-fledged champion of the man who won only because others have fallen?
- It is not necessary to fall. You can be the strongest of all three heads of the entire four-year cycle, but the fall in the Olympic final and become the eighth. So what? Will you tell me that was stronger than all but fell? Well this is nonsense. To win, there should be no excuses at all. Either it is there or not.

Viktoria Komova interview - 'I will never forget that Isinbayeva soughtme out'

Russian consumer bank VTB, sponsors of Russian gymnastics, have a nice interview with Viktoria Komova on their web pages where she affirms her desire to continue competing as long as possible, and says how hard it has been overcoming the psychological and physical effects of the injury and illness that have dogged her since 1992.  There are some lovely pictures of Vika - I am showing a selection here.  The Google translate is particularly poor, but I have lifted some of the highlights.  I will link to more comprehensive translations if they become available.

I hope we can see Viktoria return as an all arounder - I think that is where her strength lies.

- Viktoria says she has the potential to add to her D scores, if not by half a point then at least by a few tenths.  There is a possible new connection on bars.  She mentions Kovacs flights as a possible development for women's UB - the Chinese are already doing this, but she herself is too tall to attempt it.  And she has a good 'stock' of elements in her routines already.

- She remembers her mistake on vault in the all around, but doesn't beat herself up about it.  She just uses it as learning, to help her improve her performance next time.  What hurts more are the injuries she has suffered.  After the Olympics, on the 28th December, she sprained an ankle.  After her recovery, on the first day back in the gym, she was jogging and hurt the ankle again, ending up in plaster and on crutches.  Coming back from that was so difficult - every night in bed, she would imagine going for a run in the morning, and turning the ankle again.  She says it was scary and it was impossible to escape the fear for a long time.

- She says she wants to go to the next Olympics and keep competing as long as possible - as long as she has strength.

- The interviewer raises the case of Oksana Chusovitina who has now been competing since 1992 [note - the original erroneously says 'Fabrichnova' and mentions the 1992 Olympics - but of course we know they mean Chusovitina and that she began at world level in Indianapolis 1991/Goodwill Games 1990].  Vika wasn't even born in 1992!  Viktoria says this is unique but if she still had the strength, why not?

- It was especially hard for her last year when, having recovered from her injury, she was ready to compete at the Russia Cup - and looking forward to the experience!  Four days before the trip, she had packed her suitcase ... And then came down with meningitis, serious meningitis.  So then she had to go into hospital ...

- She says that the Youth Olympics, where she won three gold medals, were a highlight for her and she was particularly delighted when (multiple World and Olympic champion pole vaulter) Elena Isinbayeva sought her out to congratulate her on her performances.  She couldn't believe that Isinbayeva had watched her and wanted to congratulate her - it was a moment she will never forget.  She saw Elena from a distance at the post-Olympics reception in the Kremlin, but didn't approach her,  she imagines that Elena will now have forgotten about her ...

She has heard a few things about Gabby Douglas and knows that she has done some endorsement/modelling work, but doesn't know much else.  She says that the American team is very deep (the interview would have been conducted some time ago, before the Jesolo Cup).

Born January 30, 1995 in Voronezh. Three-time Olympic champion Youth Games in Singapore, two-time silver medalist in London, World Champion 2011 on the uneven bars, European champion, 2012. Member of the Russian national team in gymnastics.

Eremina, Skrypnik, Melnikova, Sokova - four young champions for Russiain 2015

The Russian Junior Championships closed today with event finals in beam and floor, and the young Russians in the Master of Sport category demonstrated their fighting spirit, recording some good results and demonstrating that this generation has relative strength in depth - even though there is still a clear weakness on vault.

The four event champions are -

Vault - Elena Eremina, coached by Alexander Kiryashov in St Petersburg (5.3/4.6 : 14.134)
Uneven Bars -  Daria Skrypnik, who resides in Krasnodar (6.6 : 15.567)

Beam - Angelina Melnikova, from Voronezh (14.767) http://sportgymrus.ru/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/MS.compressed.pdf
Floor -  Ekaterina Sokova from Vladimir (14.633) http://sportgymrus.ru/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/2-list-MS.pdf

Melnikova, who had scored 15.6 on uneven bars in the team competition, but who fell on her layout Jaeger here, took silver on floor, showing her potential as an all arounder.  Skrypnik took a bronze medal on floor. With Eremina taking bronze on bars and silver on beam, and Sokova bronze on beam, these four gymnasts have established themselves at the top of their generation, although it remains to be seen if they can make the perilous transition to senior level.

2001 born Eremina, age eligible for selection to the 2017 World Championships, will just miss out on the Rio Olympics but Melnikova, Skrypnik and Sokova (just squeezes in with a 12th December birthday) all have a chance to make the Games.  The past record, however, shows that at most one first year senior will make the cut - in London, it was Anastasia Grishina.  Given the increasingly conservative Russian team selections that focus on reliability and a proven track record long term, it is likely to be extremely difficult for any 2000-born gymnast to make the Russian team.  Next year's Russia Cup, and the European Championships in spring, will doubtless be the testing grounds.  I hope these girls all work hard and put up a strong fight - they will likely be the foundations of Russia's progress post-2016.

Angelina Simakova - three gold medals as a Cand. MS - AA, vault and floor!

In the Candidate Master of Sport competitions the following gymnasts won :

Vault - Angelina Simakova - 14.767 (Yaroslavl)
Uneven Bars - Yuliana Perebinosova - 13.967 (Penza)
Floor - tied between Viktoria Gorbatova and Angelina Simakova - 14.267 (both Yaroslavl) - http://sportgymrus.ru/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/KMS-2-list.compressed.pdf
