Grebyonkin - all the top gymnasts will be in Penza, except Afanasyeva

Young gymnasts line up prior to the first major Championships of the year

In an interview with Itar-Tass national head coach Evgeny Grebyonkin has given us some clues as to the competitors in Penza this week.

'All of the strongest gymnasts will take part in Penza, with the exception of Afanasyeva, who has only just begun full training again after a foot operation', he says.  'Komova, Grishina and Mustafina will compete for the top places.  Tatiana Nabiyeva has been unable to decide about the future continuation of her career, and this competition will help her draw a conclusion.'

The Antwerp World Championships, back in October, was the women's last major competition.  Since then, Viktoria Komova has recovered from a foot injury she suffered at New Year.  Earlier this year, Aliya Mustafina took a two month break, and she is now working towards achieving optimum form at the European Championships.  She has recovered from her break, but won't be doing anything new here.  They will see how things go, then take some decisions.

Afanasyeva has had two leg surgeries, and the doctors have been advising caution.  If she is ready for Sofia that will be fine, if not it doesn't matter, but they hope she will be ready for Worlds in the autumn.

Kharenkova will compete in both the all around and event finals and will contend for a top place on the senior team.  'Masha made us very happy', says Grebyonkin about Kharenkova's performance at the recent Cottbus Cup, where she brought home medals on beam and floor.  Grebyonkin also mentions Anna Rodionova as an improving gymnast who won a medal on bars at the same competition.  She has added three tenths to her uneven bars D score and unfortunately injured her foot in Cottbus but will be competing here, and the coaches will be watching her closely to see what conclusions they can draw.

Russian Championships 2014 - Junior team results

Central Federal District gymnasts Ekaterina Sokova and Angelina Melnikova were Russian team mates in Canada earlier this year, are now shining in their country's national championships

Central Federal District (drawing on three gymnasts from Viktoria Komova's home town, Voronezh) beat last year's winners Moscow to today's girls team competition.   Volga General District, whose most famous team member is the graceful Anastasia Dmitrieva, took the third team position for a bronze medal, ahead of St Petersburg.

There was an outstanding performance from Voronezh's Angelina Melnikova, who will turn 16 in July 2016 and was a medallist at the recent Gymnix International Junior Cup.  Melnikova scored a competition high 15.2 on beam, and also leads uneven bars and floor with scores of 14.8 and 14.537 respectively.  Muscovite Seda Tutkhalyan delivered the highest vault score of 14.733.

Working under the Russian Junior code, Melnikova totted up an impressive all around score of 58.767.  In second place came the powerful Seda Tutkhalyan with a score of 58.  These scores represent a significant improvement over last year's competition where the winning total (Maria Bondareva) was 56.  In Penza today, the top seven gymnasts cleared an all around total of 54, which only two gymnasts managed last year, perhaps suggesting more depth amongst this exciting up and coming generation.  Third and fourth places were taken by Anastasia Dmitrieva and Daria Mikhailova.

These junior gymnasts will now look forward to the junior all around competition on Friday, and event finals on Sunday.  Complete results can be found at the Russian Gymnastics Federation's website, http://www.sportgymrus.ru/Admin/GetFile.ashx?get=1&id=43137.

Mustafina Russian Champion once more

Courtesy of the RGF

Aliya Mustafina successfully defended her national title today with a convincing, if not totally faultless, display, showing herself to be preparing well for the coming internationals.  She also led her Moscow team to a strong first position in the qualifying for team final, later this week.

Aliya has now matched the illustrious Svetlana Khorkina for the number of national all around titles she has won (previously 2009, 2012 and 2013) although Khorkina's career wins were accured over a longer period of time - 1993, 1995, 1997, and 2002.  Looking fit and more energetic than at any period of last year, Mustafina shows much promise for the coming year if she can build on her early year training and continue to develop.  She looked especially strong on beam and floor, but suffered a deduction on bars, where she competed her 2011 routine but suffered a deduction when she hit a landing mat with her feet.

Mustafina's Moscow team mates Alla Sosnitskaya followed her closely into second place all around, and Anastasia Grishina, who performed mostly watered down routines and didn't look very happy, managed to win the bronze medal.

We were rewarded for our patience with a good performance from Viktoria Komova on the bars, but a fall from beam will have dampened the excitement of her return to competition somewhat.  She competed three pieces, no floor exercise at this moment in time.  Ksenia Afanasyeva performed well on her only piece, vault, contributing 14.933 to her team's score (Maria Paseka managed to achieve the highest mark on vault).  There were some high scores on bars from unexpected places, in particular Moscow's Daria Spiridinova (15.133) who leads qualification for this apparatus ahead of Anna Rodionova and Viktoria Komova.  Mustafina leads qualifications on beam with a 15.4, by far the highest score, and also is ahead on floor, with a 15.1, closely followed by Sosnitskaya.

Young Maria Kharenkova competed only on bars and beam and had a mediocre competition today, by her own standards.  She has I think qualified to beam final so perhaps will be able to pull out a good result on Sunday in the event finals.

The full results are available (in Russian) here.

Angelina Melnikova confirmed her status at the top of the junior Russian tree today with an outstanding performance in the junior championships (Master of Sports category), scoring a total of 58.3.  She was followed by Seda Tutkhalyan and Daria Mikhailova, both Muscovites. Mikhailova trains with Anastasia Grishina under Viktor Razumovsky.

A symphony of Ksenia Afanasyeva

After two ankle surgeries in six months, World, Universiade and European Champion Ksenia Afanasyeva wasn't supposed to be at these Championships.  At the last minute, however, she made the decision to put in a showing and help her team.  Ksenia's face, most of all, shows how important her gymnastics is to her.  These pictures, by Elena Mikhailova for the Russian Gymnastics Federation, all convey an emotion, an atmosphere that is somehow unique to Afanasyeva.

Welcome back, Ksenia.

Thoughtful, before her first performance

Imperious, eternally elegant

A breathtaking leap

Typical Afanasyeva .. Complex shapes, curves and angles

Unique floor level movement

Ksenia's eyeline, hands and foot draw the focus in one direction, just as the movement is about to turn the other.

Balletic leap, caught in an off balance moment.  The angle of the head and arms provides a match to the position of the legs.

Practising vault under the watchful eye of Marina Nazarova, Ksenia's coach since childhood

Purposeful and hard working.  World Champion, twice Olympian helps to prepare the bars for her team mates

Daria Mikhailova yesterday.  Courtesy of RGF

The 14 year old training mate of Anastasia Grishina won the bronze medal yesterday.  There is something about her that I like: a composed and mature bearing.  Galina Grishina shot the following videos of Daria's floor (14.1, the highest floor score of the day) and beam (13.667) which are worth a glance.

Daria will turn 15 in December (born 1999) - making her eligible for senior status next year, if I have my sums right.  Which, sometimes, I don't.

Breaking news - Anastasia Grishina injury

Anastasia Grishina fell to the ground after over rotating a triple twist on floor in the team final this morning.  She was stretchered off.

It seems that there is a problem with her left knee (dislocation?).  Her mother says she will need an MRI scan.  It will probably be days before anything will be confirmed.

Unpleasant echoes for the Russian team.  Unsurprisingly, Aliya Mustafina looked rather dispirited in her floor exercise, sitting down her double Arabian and taking a noticeable pause before resuming the exercise.  Before her exercise, right after Grishina's injury, the World Champion was seen to crouch by the podium, as if in tears ... An emotional moment for her in many ways.

Just keep hoping for the best, and think strong thoughts for Nastia and her teams.

NOTE CORRECTION FROM EARLIER EDITION - Grishina was injured during competition, not warm up.

Today's winning Central team - Back row - Gannochenko, Elizarova, Kharenkova.  Front row - Afanasyeva, Kruglikova, Komova

The Central Federal District won today's team competition, only narrowly over the powerful Moscow who had to take a score of 3.2 for Grishina's fateful floor exercise (for those of you who have missed the loop, Anastasia has suffered a possibly serious knee injury, landing a triple twist).  The Central team benefitted from standout performances from Komova on bars (15.333) and Kharenkova on beam (15.6), but of course all team members contributed including Afanasyeva who looks to be recovering well from her injury.  Kharenkova's score was higher than that of the World Beam Champion, Mustafina, who also managed an impressive 15.333 there.  Mustafina was the single best competitor overall, almost matching Komova on bars (15.033), taking the top score on vault (15.067) and only faltering on floor after Grishina's crushing fall, which had visibly upset the great champion (13.7).  If Mustafina decides to compete in tomorrow's event finals, she has a legitimate shot at a medal in every piece, perhaps even gold given her feisty character.  Russia relies on her even more so now that Grishina appears to be out of the running.

Central.  165.8
Moscow. 165.27
St Petersburg. 162.833

The full results are available here - http://www.sportgymrus.ru/Admin/GetFile.ashx?get=1&id=43946

It was more than a little upsetting to see Grishina's injury, and I know the entire gymternet community will want to send her our love, and positive thoughts for a good recovery.

There are some wonderful pictures of the awards ceremony on the RGF website.  I will share a few of them here.

St Petersburg is the only medal winning team not to count a top current international gymnast in its ranks, and they look very happy with their bronze medal.  Pictured here with Central's Maria Kharenkova

Beautiful smiles from Rodionova, Sosnitskaya and Spiridinova ...

Photo bombed by 2007 World Bars Champion and 2008 Olympian Ksenia Semyonova!

St Petersburg again, with their Candidate Master of Sport champion Elena Eremina, and coach Alexander Kiryashov.

A rather formal shot, unless you are from St Petersburg.  Mustafina stands proud, almost symbolically alone in raising her arm.  The whole Moscow team must feel exhausted, having led the competition convincingly only to be robbed of gold in such upsetting circumstances.  Paseka looks resigned.   Kharenkova looks pleased.

The best shot of the Moscow team.

I think it was best to win bronze this year :-)

Beam medalists today in Penza ... Daria Spiridinova, Maria Kharenkova, Aliya Mustafina

Not everything went to plan today for the 'big' stars of Russian gymnastics.  There were signs of some strain and tiredness as the weakened ranks of former Olympians stepped aside and made room for three newcomers to the medal rostrum ... the interesting Daria Spiridinova (coached by Tatiana Fomkina, who formerly coached 1996 Olympian, Elena Dolgopolova), the feisty Maria Kharenkova (who  needs no introduction) and Polina Fyodorova from Cheboksary (highly touted by Sergei Zelikson back in 2013).  Winning on vault was Alla Sosnitskaya, who last year won gold in floor at the Russia Cup.

Today's stand out performance was by Maria Kharenkova on beam.  She didn't quite match her strongest performance of the team final, but her beam was on another planet to the others as she zipped through her skills with speed and confidence, minimising a very off balance landing in a layout as if she were an American.  Toe point is certainly not Kharenkova's métier, a characteristic she shares with the all around world champion.  But she shows an ability to turn on the performance in clinch situations, and that could be to the benefit of those shaky Russians.

Also prompting a collective outtake of digital breath was Viktoria Komova, who has returned to competition in good form, bringing her classical technique and elegance to another level with her mature physique and outlook.  She finished out of the medals on bars, but outclassed the competition there by the sheer beauty of her swing.  On beam she gave a gorgeous display that would have earned her the bronze medal.  Still a way to go with the competition consistency, however, which is what we hope Kharenkova may bring to the party and what we need Komova to improve upon ...

Mustafina had a bad day, taking a curious fall on bars (was she trying to avoid hitting that landing mat?) and beam (where she looked very tentative and nervous throughout the first part of the exercise)

These championships form part of the selection process for May's European Championships and ask more questions than they answer.  The former Olympians on whom Russia has relied are seriously depleted: Afanasyeva has only been training for a few weeks, Grishina is out with what she has now confirmed to be a partial ACL tear, cartilage damage and a broken bone, Komova is barely on the comeback trail, Paseka looks to be a spent force and Mustafina ... well, anything is possible.  One thing is for sure, we will see some new names.  There are still weeks left before the final selection needs to be made, so there will be ups and downs and, no doubt, at least one surprise in the team this year.

Russian gymnastics ... A few issues and questions

A popular figure ... Coach Anton Stolyar with the Russian team this week

Issues and questions still dog the Russian programme despite the optimistic feeling of Komova's return, the apparently rapid recovery of Afanasyeva and the early competition vigour of Mustafina.  By the end of the week, certain factors have been laid bare.  The injury to Grishina makes clear the fact that Russia still largely depends on its Olympians as medal prospects, and they are injury prone and below par currently.  Of the newcomers, only Kharenkova is showing the steel necessary at the very top level, and she is out of the ordinary in transitioning successfully to senior level.  Promising juniors such as Melnikova and Tutkhalyan are not uncommon in the Russian programme, but much less common is the consistency and discipline to raise junior talent to senior medals.  Where, for example, were Shelgunova and Kuzmina this week?

Some good work should be acknowledged.  Spiridinova and Rodionova have made significant progress on bars under the guidance of coach Anton Stolyar (who formerly led the Italian juniors to great things on this piece).  Stolyar appears to be a popular figure with the gymnasts, and regularly accompanies teams on overseas trips for the second level competitions.  Elfimov will no doubt shape Komova as beautifully as humanly possible; the two of them have become as much a compelling partnership as Khorkina and Pilkin once were.  Afanasyeva has the diligent and supportive Nazarova, one of the leading coaches of Russia's new era who regularly fosters new talent on the Russian team.  Kharenkova and experienced coach Olga Sagina (who formerly coached Produnova and Sidorova) appear to be joined at the hip.

But who is on Mustafina's side?  Raisa Ganina certainly supports her in competition and has been responsible for the Olympic Champion's progress on beam.  But Ganina was always a beam specialist and choreographer before Alexandrov's departure to Brazil.  Has Alexandrov left a gap in Mustafina's training regime that has yet to be filled?  Is the Olympic Champion getting all the support she needs?

I remember a similar situation when Boguinskaia so tragically lost her coach after the 1988 Olympics; no single coach could ever seemed to mentor Boguinskaia in quite the same way as Miromanova had.  So Boguinskaia seemed to benefit from the collective efforts of Alexandrov, Ostapenko and Kozeev, as well as a coach from her Minsk club.  This arrangement no doubt exploited the talents of each one to the full, as well as challenging the complex network of relationships between the gymnast and her coaches, and was dependent on strong management and a clear focus on competition goals and the gymnast's welfare.

Are the strong working relationships, focus and goals of the Soviet team shared by today's  coaches?  National coach Grebyonkin, who as a bars specialist shaped the Russian team's success on this piece prior to and during 2012, was sporadically visible throughout the competition, showing his rather unshaven face for Mustafina's bars, Nabiyeva's vault and Spiridinova's beam.

And, speaking as an incurable coach-watcher, what of the apparent growing popularity of Stolyar versus the ebbing visibility of Grebyonkin?

Viktoria Komova performs on bars in the team event earlier this week

An announcement, made by Valentina Rodionenko earlier:

Mustafina, Komova, Sosnitskaya, Spiridonova and Kharenkova will perform at the European Championships in artistic gymnastics.  According to the results of the Russian Championships in Penza, a decision has been made as to who will compete May 12-18 in Sofia (Bulgaria).

"As a result of the Russian championship, we finally decided on the composition of the national team at the European Championships" - said Valentina Rodionenko.   "We decided not to ask Ksenia Afanasyeva to perform there.  In addition, Anastasia Grishina has an injury - a suspected partial cruciate ligament rupture. The rest are available to compete."

"At the European Championships the athletes who compete will have proven themselves in the championships of Russia.  Aliya Mustafina is certainly number one.  Viktoria Komova, did not compete on all apparatus.  Young athletes Alla Sosnitskaya, Daria Spiridonova and Maria Kharenkova will each have their own job to do."

It is early days to announce the team yet - expect there to be changes.

Russian Gymnastics - Men's National Championships 2014

Nico Jackson writes:

Greetings, Russian fans!

I hope everyone enjoyed last week’s coverage of the senior and junior women. Never a dull moment in Russian women’s gymnastics. However, this week we turn our attention to the men! Like the women’s competition, these championships will serve as a trial for the upcoming European Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria. The men will also be vying for five spots on the European team.

Unfortunately, the men’s competition will be without a very big star, Emin Garibov, who recently had surgery on his shoulder and will likely be out for most of the season. His absence will certainly leave a considerable gap on his Moscow team along with potential medals on parallel bars and high bar. Nevertheless, this should be a good opportunity for others to try to fill Garibov's void and make a name for themselves in the competition.

These championships will also mark the return of European Champion, David Belyavskiy,  and Universiade Champion, Nikolai Kuksenkov, both of whom didn’t fare too well at last year‘s World Championships due to sudden injuries at a pre-Worlds training camp. Being Russia’s strongest all-arounders, surely these two will be fighting for the top spot and bragging rights as the king of Russia.

Denis Ablyazin, a native of Penza, will most likely be the man to watch throughout the championships competing at home. Despite disappointing performances at last year’s Worlds, Ablyazin has already bounced back strongly this season winning two gold medals (still rings and floor) at the recent Cottbus World Cup. Certainly he is expected to dominate floor, rings, and vault this week.

World team members, Aleksandr Balandin (SR) and Matvei Petrov (PH), hope to continue their dominance on their event specialities, although it is rumored that Petrov might compete a few other events at these championships or perhaps later at Russian Cup. Regardless, both should remain strong contenders for the European Championship team should they do well on their respective specialties.

The competition gets underway starting tomorrow on April 9th with the juniors qualification where the top eight teams will qualify to the team final as well as qualification for the individual event finals. All-around winners will be determined at the conclusion of tomorrow’s qualification. The seniors begin on April 10th.

Although perhaps not quite as known as the seniors, a number of juniors are worth knowing and following this week since some are expected to become rising seniors within the next couple of years. Some names to look out for: Artur Dalaloyan (Moscow), Valentin Starikov(Syzran/Samara), Nikita Nagorny (Rostov-on-Don), Kirill Potapov (Tomsk), Ilya Kirbatas (Vladimir), Andrei Makolov (Tolyatti), Ivan Stretovich (Novosibirsk), Viktor Britan (Chelyabinsk) and Dmitry Lankin (Rostov-on-Don).

A live stream will be shown only for the senior men’s competition starting on Thursday, April 10 at 12:00 pm Moscow time. The link can be found here:

In case you’re wondering what all the federal districts are, they are the federal divisions of Russia essentially by region (федеральные округа). Within each federal district are oblasts (something like provinces), autonomous republics and krais. Gymnasts compete for the federal district team of their native city or where they primarily train. Moscow and St. Petersburg have special status because they are the two biggest cities in Russia, so they have their own teams.

Komova will compete two pieces in Sofia

2012 Olympian Viktoria Komova will compete on bars and beam at May's Europeans, says Russian Head Coach Valentina Rodionenko.  'Viktoria still isn't ready to vault', said Valentina, adding that they were protecting the 18 year old, but expected her to be fully ready for the World Championships in October.  She added that Anna Rodionova and Ksenia Afanasyeva were in reserve, but that Afanasyeva still hadn't recovered fully from her operation of last autumn. After participating in this competition she had decided not to try for Europeans, and was targeting the World Championships.

'Mustafina is almost fully recovered, but it wasn't quite enough in the fourth day', Rodionenko said, adding that the 2010 World Champion had performed well in the all around.

In other news, an unofficial but trustworthy source has said that Anastasia Grishina, who suffered a partial ACL tear, broken knee bone and cartilage damage in Saturday's team final, will be travelling to Germany in the 14th April for surgery with the same doctor who has treated Mustafina and other leading Russian stars.  We wish Nastia a good recovery.

Injury updates - Garibov, Kuksenkov

Nikolai Kuksenkov trains at the famous Nikolai Tolkachev School of Gymnastics in Vladimir

Nico has just confirmed that Emin Garibov will need a second surgery on his shoulder.  The European high bar champion, team captain of Russia at the 2012 Olympics, has been nursing a shoulder injury since before last year's World Championships and was announced out of the European Championships earlier this year.  Now he needs an operation on his other shoulder.  We guess that he now looks likely to be out of competition for the rest of the year.

Nikolai Kuksenkov has sprained his ankle and will not compete floor or vault this week.

Ablyazin is, however, reported to be on good form!
